Trigger points are bundles of muscle fibers which become "knotted" or inelastic, unable to contract or relax, due to an injury, spinal abnormality and/or poor biomechanics. Physical examination shows marked muscle tenderness, irritability of the muscle and fascia, loss of range of motion, and muscle weakness. Shortening of the muscle and loss of range of motion, which can be seen with an injury to a muscle or when muscles are strained or used eccentrically, can lead to myofascial dysfunction. Treatment of the myofascia by an injection of lidocaine, dry needling or deep muscle massage, followed by a specific, therapeutic stretching program can re-establish a painless full range of motion.
