Epidural Steroid Injections
The membrane that covers the spinal cord and nerve roots in the spine is called the dural membrane. The space surrounding the dura is the epidural space. Nerves travel through the epidural space to the back and then to the extremities. If these nerve roots become inflamed due to irritation from a damaged disc or severe arthritis of the spine, pain may occur in the region these nerves travel to. An epidural injection places anti-inflammatory medicine (corticosteroids) into the epidural space to decrease inflammation of the nerve roots and accelerate the healing process with minimal or no systemic effect.
Indications: Radicular Pain, Spinal Stenosis, Cancer Pain
